Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing affordable housing to the homelessness and works in partnership with individuals, churches and various civic organizations. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and renovates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans.

For the past twelve years SIS has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Korea on a volunteer basis as well as through financial donation. SIS is in the process of setting dates for the coming school year, so check back soon.

Through their participation as volunteers with Habitat, SIS students feel they are able to help those less fortunate in some small way – they see this experience as a means of giving something back to the community/country in which they live

Mu Alpha Theta

Seoul International School Student Council
The SIS Math Club was first established in 2004, and in the 2006-7 school year that club was accepted as an official chapter of Mu Alpha Theta. MATh is a US-based National Math Honors society for High school students, with over 1600 chapters worldwide. The Math Club was initially created in order to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their interest and talent in mathematics. The current SIS Chapter of MATh not only seeks to fulfill those goals as well, but also to seeks to promote Mathematics in the SIS community.

Currently, MATh has over 100 members, ranging from Freshmen to Seniors, and is divided into three different divisions: Mu, Alpha, and Theta. The Mu team consists of students who are currently enrolled in higher level mathematics (above Pre-Calculus), the Alpha team is for students are presently in Pre-Calculus, and the Theta team is for students who are currently in either Geometry or Algebra II, or both.

From the beginning, MATh members have participated in various competitions, both National and International. Initially, we competed against schools from Korea at the Korean Nationals and world wide against schools also in the Honor society in the Log 1 Competition. Since that time, many additional competitions have been added, including the South East Asia Math Competition (in recent years, held in Hong Kong, Thailand and KL), the American Math Competition (and AIME), and more recently, The American Scholastic Math Association, the Mandelbrot and US MATh National Championships.

SIS students have been tremendously successful at these competitions, never failing to make a top spot internationally. Presently, SIS has won 5 consecutive Korean Nationals and has never failed for a top 10 World Wide ranking in the Log (1) competition (including several 1st  place Regional finishes) with numerous SIS students placing in the top 25 in individual rankings in their respective divisions. In addition, many students who have participated in the AMC’s have also qualified for and participated in the American Invitational Math Exam.

The SIS Chapter of MATh has also sought to foster a mathematical environment by mentoring Middle School students and helping in the formation of a counterpart MS Math Club. As well, MATh members host various open lectures, run a free website for students seeking math help and organize several important fun math activities K-12 (including Pi Day).

National Art Honor Society

The National Art Honor Society (NAHS) was established in 1978 in the United States by the National Art Education Association for high school students grades 10-12, for the purpose of inspiring and recognizing those students who have shown an outstanding ability in art. Its purpose is to assist student members to attain their highest potential in all forms of art, and to raise awareness of art education throughout the school community.

In the past, the NAHS at Seoul International School has been involved in certain activities such as producing props for the school drama productions, mural painting projects in the school community and as well as the annual event of creating greeting cards. Recently, the NAHS has been extending its participation into more school events and as well as into the community.

Seoul International School National Honor Society

National Honor Society

In 1921 the National Association of Secondary School Principals in the United States founded the National Honor Society. It was their hope to create an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement amongst students and promote the development of other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. These ideals of scholarship, character, service and leadership remain as relevant today as they did when the society first began.

SIS seniors and juniors that are selected to join the NHS recognize not only the honor that goes with this membership, but also the responsibility that goes with this honor. During their final years of studying at SIS, NHS members have the responsibility of setting an example and maintaining a standard of excellence in leadership, service, scholarship and character.

This year NHS has hit the ground running! In the fall, the NHS planned the Annual Christmas Gift Drive for an orphanage in Seoul. This Gift Drive has been running for the past 5 years and is one of the highlights for NHS students in organizing a special event for the local community. This semester, NHS members supported the school-wide fundraising efforts for the survivors of the earthquake in Haiti.
