Language Support

SIS Building Profile

The ESL program at SIS is based on an integrated model designed to provide identified students with full and equal access to their grade level curriculum. The ESL in the Mainstream program promotes student learning by helping to facilitate full and equal access to the curriculum for all students. This is achieved through a collaborative approach to in-class language learning, which is often referred to as the Sheltered Immersion model. This approach recognizes that effective instruction is student-centered and views language acquisition as an integrated, multifaceted experience within the language-rich environment of the classroom. All SIS students benefit from the language enhancing strategies that develop from the collaboration between ESL specialists and content teachers.
